Rush Street bridge crosses the Chicago River in this color lithograph, which is seen from Norton's Block on River Street with vessels crowding the water below. Issued about 1861 by E. Whitefield from Rufus Blanchard's shop and printed by Charles Shober, it belongs to a series of city views that recorded Chicago during its rapid growth as a grain and lumber port. Bridges of this kind swung open to let masted ships pass, so the mix of spans and rigging shows how the river served as the city's main working street.
