Few places in the Great Chicago Fire capture its chaos like the Randolph Street Bridge, which crossed the Chicago River in the city's downtown core. The fire that began on October 8, 1871, leapt the river and pushed residents, goods, and wagons toward the bridges as they tried to escape the flames. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for popular sensational views of American life, issued this hand-colored lithograph a year or more after the disaster, when the fire had become a national story. Its bright colors and crowded foreground made the catastrophe easy to read and sell to a public that followed the rebuilding of the city.
