Among the bridges that the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871 threatened, the one at Randolph Street crossed the South Branch of the Chicago River near the city's commercial core. New York publisher Currier & Ives produced this hand-colored lithograph a year or two after the disaster, when Chicago was still rebuilding. The fire burned for about two days, destroyed much of the central business district, and left roughly 100,000 residents homeless. Prints like this one turned the catastrophe into a dramatic public spectacle, and they remain a useful record of how Americans imagined the event from afar.
