Junior Wells, a Chicago blues harmonica player and singer, shares this 1966 bill with the Grateful Dead and the Doors, a pairing that reflects how San Francisco's music scene drew on Chicago blues. The poster was promoted under the banner "Bill Graham Presents," and Graham's concerts were central to the city's late-1960s rock circuit. The artist, Wes Wilson, was one of the leading designers of that scene, and he treated the lettering as image, bending and layering letters until they were partly hard to read. That approach helped shape the look of San Francisco concert posters and influenced poster design well beyond the Bay Area.
