The Fine Arts Building stood at 410 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago, and this glass negative records it as a stop on the city's cultural map around 1900. The building was completed in 1898 for the Studebaker Brothers' carriage company's showroom and was later remodeled into a home for artists, musicians and theater people, housing studios and the Studio Building's Auditorium theater-era crowd nearby. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American cities for color and black-and-white views, the negative shows the building's ornate terra-cotta facade and its place along Michigan Avenue's busy street life.
