Commodities traders gather on the floor of the Merchandise Mart in this frame, a view of Chicago's trading life taken by Stanley Kubrick. He was then a young staff photographer for *Look* magazine, and he made the picture for an assignment on Chicago as a "city of contrasts." It is frame 21 on a contact sheet, the small proof sheet photographers used to choose negatives for printing, and the magazine's library logged it in January 1949. The Merchandise Mart, a wholesale center completed in 1930, was a building of enormous scale, and the crowded floor shows how much business moved through it.
