This is a color halftone reproduction of Thomas Moran's 1908 painting of the Grand Canyon, published in 1912 as a print that could be bought and hung without the original canvas. Moran, a painter known for his western scenes, had first seen the canyon in 1873 while traveling with John Wesley Powell's survey, and his dramatic views helped shape how many Americans pictured the place. Photomechanical printing like this was a common way for paintings of famous landscapes to reach homes, schools and offices in the early twentieth century. The record notes that the print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which was standard practice for reproductions meant for sale.
