Shot looking west along the Colorado River, this view shows the river winding through the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon, with the cliffs stepping up on either side. The catalog credits the photograph to Fennemore and dates it to April 1872, a date based on the scholarship of Don D. Fowler and others who have studied John K. Hillers's work. Hillers was a boatman and photographer on John Wesley Powell's expedition down the river that year, and the trip produced some of the earliest photographs of the canyon's interior. The image is worth a close look for the scale it conveys, since the river is a thin line against the walls.
