Looking west along the Colorado River, this view sets the eye at water level inside the Grand Canyon, where the river runs between tall walls of layered rock. The record credits the picture to Fennemore and dates it to April 1872, based on a 1989 Smithsonian study of the western photographs of John K. Hillers. Hillers worked as a boatman and photographer on John Wesley Powell's survey of the canyon in 1871 and 1872, and the expedition's images helped give the public one of its first detailed looks at the gorge. The scale of the cliffs against the river is what stands out most.
