The record names the Colorado River where it cuts through the Grand Canyon in Arizona, a stretch that Powell's survey parties of the early 1870s were among the first to document in detail. The catalog credits the name Hillers, referring to John K. Hillers, who joined Powell's expeditions and later became a well-known Western photographer, but attributes this print to Fennemore, following a 1989 Smithsonian study of Hillers's work. The date of about 1872 places it during the years when surveyors were mapping the river through the canyon's walls, and images like this helped show audiences in the East what the region looked like.
