Rowe's Point offers a lookout along the South Rim, where visitors in the early 1900s came to see the canyon's layered walls. Around 1905, when this print was made, the Santa Fe Railway's branch to the rim had only recently opened, and the canyon was becoming a major tourist destination. Photographers produced views like this one for travelers who wanted a lasting record of the trip. Note how the strata recede into haze, a sense of depth that print makers relied on to convey the gorge's scale. The record gives only an approximate date and no maker, so those details remain unconfirmed here.
