A view looking out from O'Neil Point, one of the many overlooks along the South Rim, shows the Grand Canyon's layered walls falling away toward the Colorado River far below. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographic prints of American scenery, cities and railroad destinations in the early 1900s, and its catalog numbers like this one were used to order copies. Around 1902 the South Rim was still reached mainly by rail and stagecoach, so images like this helped bring the canyon's scale to people who would never make the trip themselves.
