The card's caption reads "Grand Canyon," but the scene shows the Royal Gorge, where the Arkansas River cuts through granite walls roughly 1,000 feet high in Colorado, hundreds of miles from Arizona's canyon. The mismatch likely reflects a publisher's loose labeling. Issued in 1874 as number 139 in the Colorado Views series by William I. Marshall, the card belongs to the stereograph boom, when viewers paid to see western scenery through a parlor viewer. The gorge later became a battleground for railroad companies, which fought over the narrow route through it in the late 1870s.
