This picture shows the Royal Gorge in Colorado, where the Arkansas River cuts between steep granite walls, rather than the Grand Canyon in Arizona that the gallery board lists. The gorge drew visitors by rail in the early 1900s, and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad ran its track along the narrow canyon floor. Photographs like this one, labeled as views of the scenery, helped turn such western sights into destinations that travelers and armchair readers could imagine long before they saw them in person.
