The Grand Canyon of the Colorado, pictured here in 1904, is a view into a gorge carved by the river over roughly six million years through layers of rock that record far older geological time. By the early twentieth century the canyon had drawn growing numbers of visitors, and the railroad lines and hotels that were beginning to reach the South Rim made it easier to see the chasm firsthand. Photographs from this period helped turn the canyon into a national symbol, and it was set aside as a national monument in 1908 before becoming a national park in 1919.
