A London satire from 1814 shows James Madison in headlong flight, with his Secretary of War, John Armstrong, also named in the subjects. The title's pun on "Maddy" mocks the American president's retreat as British forces advanced on the capital. In August 1814, British troops entered Washington and set fire to public buildings, including the Capitol and the White House, and the attack was widely blamed on poor American preparation. Printed for a British audience, the cartoon turns that humiliation into ridicule of the American leadership.
