The print shows four buildings on one grounds: Dr. King's residence, the president's villa, the military governor's house, and the soldiers' home itself, with American flags flying over the scene. The Soldiers' Home was founded in 1851 as a residence for disabled and retired Army veterans on a wooded hilltop north of the city. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln spent summers at the villa there, which helps explain why it appears so prominently. The lithograph was published around 1868, a few years after the war ended, when the home was a memorial to the soldiers who had served.
