Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh's residence on 16th Street Northwest in Washington is the subject of this view, dated December 31, around 1910. MacVeagh, a Chicago wholesale grocer before entering federal service, led the Treasury Department under President William Howard Taft from 1909 to 1913. Sixteenth Street was one of the capital's leading residential avenues, lined with large houses for officials, diplomats and wealthy families, so the photograph shows the kind of home a cabinet member of the period would have kept. The print was copyrighted by the American Press Association, a service that supplied pictures to newspapers.
