Massachusetts Avenue is one of the diagonal boulevards Pierre Charles L'Enfant laid out in his 1791 plan for the federal capital, cutting across the city's grid and linking the Capitol with the outlying districts to the northwest. This map shows the avenue's route through the park and heights area, where the street climbed toward higher ground and the lots were gradually built up with large houses. Maps like this one were used by surveyors, property owners and city officials to track street lines, grades and development as the capital grew through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
