A Map of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia shows the capital as it was laid out on paper long before it was built up. Washington was planned in the 1790s under Pierre Charles L'Enfant, whose grid of broad avenues crossed by numbered and lettered streets was meant to give the new federal city monumental scale. Maps like this one helped investors, officials and surveyors understand the intended street plan, which in the early decades often ran through open fields, marshland and scattered farms rather than dense blocks. Look closely at the labeled public buildings and the diagonal avenues, which reveal the ambition behind a city that took most of the nineteenth century to fill in.
