Rather than a street plan alone, this survey records the land itself: the ridges, creek valleys, and low ground that shaped where Washington's avenues and public buildings could go. It was made between 1856 and 1859 by Albert Boschke, a German-born topographer who worked for the city. The city was still uneven then, with the Capitol dome under construction and the Washington Monument stalled partway up, so the map captures a capital that had grown far less than L'Enfant's 1791 plan had envisioned. Its level of detail makes it useful to anyone studying how the city was built.
