Franklin Park, the downtown Washington square also known as Franklin Square, is the setting for this watercolor and ink drawing of a magnolia in early spring, made around 1918. The park had long offered a green refuge among the city's offices and hotels, and its trees were a familiar sight to people walking through on their way to work or errands. The magnolia's March bloom reflects how the capital's gardens announced the season well before summer, and the drawing preserves a small, everyday moment of city life from the decade after World War I began.
