This drawing shows a floral relief carved from the magnolia, a native Southern tree, meant for the interior of the United States Capitol. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who supervised the building's construction after 1803, deliberately turned to American plants for ornament instead of the acanthus leaves of classical tradition. The sheet's date, between 1803 and 1814, places it during the years when the Capitol was still rising, before British troops set fire to the unfinished building in 1814. Its watercolor wash and graphite lines show how Latrobe planned carved details before they reached the stone.
