Drawn in graphite, wash, watercolor, and ink, this sheet presents an allegorical figure designed as architectural sculpture for the United States Capitol. It belongs to the Benjamin Henry Latrobe Archive at the Library of Congress and dates from between 1803 and 1814, when Latrobe was the building's architect and oversaw its interior decoration. He wanted the Capitol's ornament to reflect American subjects, as seen in his carved capitals based on native plants such as corn and tobacco. The British burning of Washington in 1814 halted much of this work, and Latrobe later returned to repair the damaged chambers.
