Taken on December 10, 1941, three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, this view shows the White House with its lights dimmed as Washington adopted wartime blackout measures. The executive mansion, which normally glowed as a symbol of national confidence, now sat muted against the night sky. Civil defense authorities across the country were quickly organizing dimouts to guard against possible air raids and to make coastal and industrial targets harder to spot. The picture records how swiftly everyday life in the capital changed after the United States entered World War II.
