The title places Urban Ledoux at the White House, though the National Photo Company's caption was rubbed away and the name comes from data it added later. The picture is dated to around 1921, the year Warren G. Harding took office and the executive mansion returned to the center of Washington's public life. The National Photo Company documented the capital's streets, monuments and official buildings in the early 20th century, and its glass negatives often show streaks and surface blemishes from age, so some marks on this image reflect the plate itself rather than the scene.
