Most views of the White House show the building itself, but this June 1923 glass negative places a Blackfeet woman on the grounds. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's visitors and landmarks in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image. Its original caption supplied the title, which uses a term now considered offensive and is unverified. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
