Few athletes of the early 1920s drew as much attention as Babe Ruth, whose 59 home runs for the New York Yankees in 1921 had just set a new single-season record. This glass negative, dated December 7, 1921, records his visit to the White House during the presidency of Warren G. Harding. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's public life, made the image. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the surface, the result of natural deterioration in the original coatings.
