Mule teams and cowboys dominate this c1904 photograph, titled simply *Freighters*, which shows the hauling trade that carried supplies across the American West. Before railroads reached many mountain and high plains communities, freight outfits like these moved goods to mining camps, ranches, and frontier towns, often over rough roads and long distances. The print was made by W.D. Harper and copyrighted by C.A. Kendrick of Denver. By the early 1900s, rail lines had overtaken much of this work, which gives the picture the feel of a fading way of life.
