The Powhatan was a sidewheel steam warship of the U.S. Navy, and its name is the detail that sets this view apart from other ship images in the collection. The caption card ties the subject to 1853, a period when the navy's steam fleet was growing and the ship was connected with Commodore Matthew Perry's effort to open Japan to American trade. The print came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced views decades after many of the events it depicted, so it probably shows the vessel as it was later seen rather than as a contemporary record. The date and subject come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
