John B. Moisant, the aviator and entrepreneur, is the subject of this c1911 portrait, a single photographic print held by the Library of Congress. Moisant was a pioneering pilot who had learned to fly in France and later ran a flying school and exhibition team in the United States, taking part in the early air meets that drew large crowds across the country. He died in a crash in New Orleans in December 1910, so a portrait from about a year later likely served to keep his name in the public eye. The record is thin on detail, so the caption card's notes should be read as unverified, but the picture still offers a glimpse of a figure who helped make flying a public spectacle in its first decade.
