The caption card gives only the name John Adair, with no date and no source, so this record alone does not settle which man is pictured. The name is most often associated with Kentucky, where a John Adair served in the Revolutionary War, later represented the state in Congress, and was governor from 1820 to 1824. Portraits of early statesmen like him were commonly engraved or lithographed for newspapers, books and commemorative sets, so the image may show how a public figure wished to be seen. Confirming the sitter and the print's date would require checking the card against other sources.
