Few pictures of a child look as openly sulky as this one, with arms folded, lips puckered, and a bonnet framing a face turned straight to the camera. The print dates to about 1902 and carries a copyright credit to F.W. Guerin of St. Louis, pointing to the commercial studio trade in which photographers sold character studies of children alongside formal portraits. The caption card tags it "Sentimental" and "Children," suggesting it was valued for mood rather than for who the sitter was, and the child's name is not recorded.
