This half-length portrait shows Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe, a stage actress and the mother of writer Edgar Allan Poe, facing the viewer. She performed with American theater companies in the early 1800s, and she died in Richmond, Virginia, in 1811, when her son was about two. The record suggests the picture may be a photographic copy of an earlier lithograph, so the c1914 date likely refers to the copy rather than the original image. Its catalog entry also links it to a U.S. Copyright Office deposit, a common route by which early images reached the public record.
