The caption card identifies this half-length portrait, turned toward the viewer, as Dorothy Catherine Draper, a member of the family of chemist John William Draper (1811-1882). The card credits him as the maker of this collotype, a gelatin-based photomechanical process that reproduces the soft, continuous tones of a photograph. No date is recorded, and the attribution comes from older catalog data, so it is worth reading with some caution. Even so, the image offers a glimpse of the family portraiture that Draper pursued during the early years of photography.
