This reproduction shows a diplomatic moment rather than a single sitter: the American commissioners who negotiated preliminary peace terms with Britain in Paris in November 1782. It copies an unfinished painting by Benjamin West, the American-born artist working in London, whose original is held by the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. The preliminary articles led to the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the Revolutionary War, so the image records a turning point in the young nation's diplomacy. Because West never completed the canvas, the work is also worth studying for how he planned the composition.
