A piano is the sole subject of this small platinum print, dated 1924 and measuring about 4 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches. Platinum printing, prized for its soft gray tones and permanence, had become uncommon by the 1920s, when the costly metal pushed most photographers toward silver-based papers. The catalog files the picture under musical instruments and pianos, so the instrument itself, not any person, is the point of interest. Its quiet tonal range shows how the process handled the instrument's heavy, solid form.
