Garrett Augustus Hobart, a Paterson, New Jersey, lawyer and Republican politician, is the sitter in this portrait, though the record gives no date for it. Hobart served as vice president under William McKinley from 1897 until his death in office in November 1899, and he was known in Washington as a shrewd party strategist. The portrait comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which preserves the work of a photographer who documented many public figures of her era. Because the caption card is unverified and undated, viewers should treat the sitting's timing as uncertain.
