Garret Augustus Hobart, a lawyer and businessman from Paterson, New Jersey, is the subject of this portrait, which is recorded only by his name and a biographical tracing on its caption card. Hobart served as Vice President of the United States under William McKinley from 1897 until his death in office in 1899, and he was a prominent Republican figure in New Jersey politics. Because the card gives no date, the photograph is best understood as a late nineteenth-century studio-style portrait of a rising public figure, the kind of image widely circulated during that era of political celebrity.
