This ink drawing, dated January 4, 1900, shows Marcus Alonzo Hanna, the Ohio businessman and senator, with his features built around a dollar sign, a caricature that fused his name with the money power many people believed he wielded in national politics. Political cartoonist Homer Davenport drew it on letterhead and inscribed it by hand to Charles H. Daniels, so it reads as a personal note as well as a finished image. Hanna had managed William McKinley's presidential campaigns, and the drawing reflects the sharp, often mocking public image of him at the turn of the century. Davenport's sketch shows how cartoonists of the era reduced complicated political figures to a single memorable symbol.
