Susan Remy is the subject of this 1971 portrait by Judy Dater, a California photographer known for her personal studies of women and artists during the early 1970s. Dater's work from this period generally favored direct, intimate encounters over elaborate staging, letting the sitter's presence carry the frame. The record for this print rests on a caption card that has been revised over time, so the occasion and circumstances of the sitting are not fully documented. Even so, the picture reflects the broader shift in 1970s portrait photography toward candid, personal exchanges between photographer and subject.
