Susan B. Anthony, who is pictured here in a bust portrait alongside Rachel Foster Avery, was one of the most prominent leaders of the American women's suffrage movement. The pairing is unusual for a portrait of Anthony, since it places her beside a younger colleague rather than alone. Avery worked closely with Anthony in the suffrage organizations of the period, and the photograph dates to about 1890, the year the National American Woman Suffrage Association was formed. The print was made by the Washington, D.C., studio of Rice and carries a copyright notice from the Mary F. Seymour Publishing Co. The catalog record notes that the date and attributions come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
