The sitter here wears a round hat, and the print is signed only "A.P.," so the maker is recorded by initials alone. Platinum prints like this one were prized around 1900 for their soft, matte tones and fine gradations, which suited the artistic portraiture that photographers were pursuing at the time. The print belonged to Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer and collector who assembled a large group of artistic photographs, and it was given to the Library of Congress in 1948. It also appeared in the 2001 exhibition catalog *Ambassadors of Progress*, which surveyed American photography of the period.
