Thomas Moran's painting of the Sierra Nevada summit, which spans the California and Nevada border, is the source for this image. Louis Prang & Co. of Boston reproduced it as a chromolithograph, building the color from a series of stone impressions, each printed in a separate hue. Prints like this were sold widely in the 1870s, bringing images of Western scenery into homes across the country at a time when few viewers had seen these mountains firsthand. The jagged peaks and broad sky reflect the period's fascination with the West as a place of grandeur.
