El Capitan, the granite monolith rising above the floor of Yosemite Valley, is the subject here, rendered in color by Louis Prang's Boston firm around 1871. The chromolithograph was issued as the first number of "Prang's Gems of American Scenery," a series that brought western landscapes to eastern parlors at a time when few Americans had seen them firsthand. Yosemite had been set aside by Congress as a protected grant in 1864, and images like this one helped make the valley's sheer cliffs a national symbol of the American landscape.
