This east-front view of the United States Capitol comes from an album kept by Benjamin Brown French, the federal official who oversaw public buildings in Washington during the 1850s and 1860s. In those years the Capitol was being transformed, with its wings extended and a new cast-iron dome replacing the earlier one, so the building photographed here was a work in progress. The print is an albumen paper photograph, the standard process of the period, and its warm, slightly glossy tones help show how officials and visitors documented the city's changing landmarks.
