Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued hand-colored lithographs by the thousands, sold this scene of a country winter morning around 1873 as an affordable image for middle-class parlors. Rural snow scenes like this were among the firm's best-known sellers, and the rustic farm setting reflected the nostalgia many urban buyers felt for the countryside. The print is catalogued as number 7280 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné, a standard reference for tracing the firm's output, and its hand-coloring would have been applied by workers who finished each sheet by eye.
