Few hotels are as closely tied to a railway as the Château Frontenac, the stone hotel the Canadian Pacific Railway built above the St. Lawrence in Quebec City, and this poster places it at the center of a winter scene of skiing and tobogganing. Railway companies used posters like this to draw travelers north in the cold months, presenting snow sports as a reason to visit in their own right. Bruce Price designed the hotel, which opened in 1893, and its turrets and steep copper roofs still make it one of the most recognizable buildings in Canada. Notice how the sports are shown as lively leisure rather than hard work.
