Few posters from the period carry a painter's signature as plainly as this one, designed by J.E.H. MacDonald for the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. MacDonald later became a founding member of the Group of Seven, and his bold, flat color and strong structure in this lithograph reflect the same eye for design that shaped his landscapes. Issued in 1919, the year after the Armistice, the poster belongs to a wave of postwar material that used public fairs to mark victory and honor the soldiers who had served. The lithograph was printed in Toronto by Rolph, Clark, Stone, Ltd.
