Matthew Henson stands on the deck of the *Roosevelt* in heavy Arctic clothing, the ship's arrival at Sydney, Nova Scotia, marking a return from the frozen north. Henson served as the chief assistant to Robert Peary on several expeditions, and he learned to handle dogs, sledges, and cold-weather travel with the help of Inuit companions, skills that shaped his work in the field. The *Roosevelt* was built for Peary's Arctic voyages, so this photograph captures a moment in the long effort to reach the North Pole, a goal Henson later shared when the expedition reached it in 1909.
